In an unassuming mini mall in Halandri, Bibliostati is quietly changing the game for book-cafes in the city. This cozy library-café, the first of its kind in the city, is decorated like a friend’s living room and has floor-to-ceiling shelves stacked with a treasure trove of 6,000 Greek and French books. The owner’s parents built the collection for over 60 years; you can find anything from rare, out-of-print editions of classics to translations of famous works in regional Greek dialects. There’s no fees or membership required—just take your book, sit down, and enjoy, and when you’re ready to leave, hand your book back in with the bookmark each visitor gets to mark their place. On the café side, you can enjoy your reading with coffee, wine, or craft beer and bite to eat from their changing daily menu (you may find carrot cake, spinach and feta tart, or coffee cake with cream cheese). Bring a friend too and enjoy a game of chess, or attend one of their live jazz nights or other events, like drawing classes. Bibliostati, you’ve won our hearts.
