Hidden Gems: Kimolos

cimelostudios.gr

Kimolos is a highly underrated island in the Cyclades if you’re looking for peace, relaxation, and a slice of authenticity. The island is named after kimolia (chalk), one of its biggest exports. Hang out in Hora, the main town, to admire the 400-year-old castle and the modern blue-and-white houses around it, then go swimming in some of this island’s legendary beaches. The biggest and most popular is Bonatsa, while Prassa and Aluki are great for families and tiny Vroulidi is great for exploring oceanic depths. Mavrospilia is great for a touch of romance, with a large sea cave and a stunning view of the sunset. Meanwhile, if you really love your aesthetics, head to Rema beach, where you’ll find the island’s famed sirmata—sea caves and storehouses closed off with colorful wooden doors where locals store their boats. For a dose of nature and adventure, hike the walking path leading to Skiadi (a huge, natural stone structure shaped exactly like a mushroom), then head to the nearest taverna for ladenia, a handmade focaccia-like bread topped with tomato and onion slices, soaked in olive oil, and baked to perfection.

Stay tuned for the next hidden gem!
