There’s a fun event happening in Athens today: The Australia Day Party at Athens Sports Bar (Veikou 3a; 2109235811) in downtown Athens! Australia Day, the official national day of Australia, is celebrated the world over with parties and barbeques. Today, the Athens Sports Bar (an Athens institution run by a family of Australian expats) is celebrating with an all-day party featuring Australian treats and drinks, a sausage sizzle, and a fundraiser for the Australia wildfires. The party will round up tonight with a screening of the last game of the NFL. Australian expats, Greek-Australians, sports fans, and anyone who wants to get together and have a good time are welcome! (And if you do go, tell them you read about it from Tatiana at The Athenian Site!)
The menu of the day features burgers from the on-site Bullseye Burger, Lamingtons (a classic Australian dessert consisting of sponge cake dipped in chocolate and sprinkled with coconut shavings), and barbequed sausages. Drinks on the menu include a special cocktail with rum, lime, ginger, and passionfruit, as well as Australian wines and beer.
(Fun fact: The sausage sizzle harkens back to an old Australian tradition of politicians barbequing sausages outside of voting booths in an effort to gain votes).
The Athens Sports Bar has been hosting its annual Australia Day Party for over 20 years. The bar was established as part of Athens Backpackers, a hostel established by the family in the early 2000’s. Since then, they’ve also added studios apartments, a launderette, a luggage locker, and an internet center. As well as holiday celebrations, the Athens Sports Bar also hosts a Karaoke Night every Thursday and a Pub Quiz every Monday.
